Special Events
A number of special events highlight the LSAA calendar year. February brings the GLACIER GLIDE: A Snowcase of Wintered Artists. This one day show began in 1989 with the intent of integrating art and the outdoors. Held at beautiful Presque Isle Park during the depths of winter, it showcases a number of art works on exhibit along the cross-country ski and hike trail that traverses the perimeter of the "Island." Student art work from around the county is also on display in the Presque Isle Pavilion, where one can warm up with some hot cider while they view the art, and vote for your favorite, "Best of Snow" art piece.

Each spring, the Northern Michigan Art Museum, on the campus of Northern Michigan University, hosts the LSAA ANNUAL MEMBERS SHOW. This exhibition offers members an opportunity to participate in a juried show, complete with public reception and a number of cash awards. The show typically embraces a variety of outstanding works in a wide range of media.

Summer brings the annual outdoor art fair, Art on the Rocks, a Marquette tradition since 1958. Held at the last FULL week-end of July, an estimated 15-18,000 visitors attend this two day event where 175 artists from around the country present high quality fine arts and crafts. This show which has twice been named in Sunshine Artists Magazine as one of the top 200 shows in the U.S.A., is held at Presque Isle Park overlooking the shores of Lake Superior. Air Conditioned shuttle buses from nearby parking areas, food from a local eatery, and entertainment make the festival a convenient and pleasurable family experience.

PEBBLE CORNER is held in conjunction with Art on the Rocks. Pebble Corner began in 1987 as an opportunity for children to create their own artwork after seeing the adult exhibits. The Youth Arts Education Director of the Marquette Arts and Culture Center serves as a director for the childrens activities. A variety of projects over the years have exposed children to mosaic, paper cutting, quilting, wearable art and other media.
